Within days of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, the NAACP immediately went into action. With the help of NAACP Image Awards and Academy Award winning actor Jamie Foxx, he and Vic Bulluck, Executive Director of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau went to the Houston Superdome. Along with members of the local NAACP branch, they coordinated the collection and distribution of immediate relief (food, clothing, and shelter), and assisted displaced citizens in Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida and Alabama.
As part of our greater mobilization efforts, thousands of NAACP members and volunteers from across the nation helped to provide food, shelter, clothing, medical supplies, counseling, transportation and transitional services to displaced persons. To continue the support, we created the NAACP Disaster Relief Fund to Aid Hurricane Katrina victims, which Foxx agreed to be the official spokesman. The NAACP, along with Jamie Foxx, continue to be actively engaged in providing relief to those hit the hardest and suffering the greatest loss due to Hurricane Katrina.
Each year, the NAACP Hollywood Bureau serves as a community partner with the Los Angeles and American Film Institutes (AFI) Film Festivals. As part of the partnership, we promote and education the entertainment community about the NAACP and the work of the Hollywood Bureau.
As a means to provide community service, NAACP Hollywood Bureau partnered with the NAACP Los Angeles Branch, PAVA (Pacific American Volunteer Association) and Heal the Bay organizations, to cleanup the Los Angeles River. The Hollywood Bureau and the Los Angeles Branch play key roles in leveraging volunteers and support for this event.
