The NAACP Next Generation (NEXTGEN) Program is a leadership development training program for young adult NAACP members between the ages of 21 and 40. Our 2019 NEXTGEN Program graduates include young professionals from 31 different states encompassing diverse educational, professional and social justice backgrounds. NEXTGEN participants complete a rigorous training program, including classroom trainings, webinar trainings, case studies, group assignments and special projects on leadership fundamentals, political action, economic empowerment, criminal justice, environmental justice, health advocacy, budgeting, fundraising, technology and direct action. NEXTGEN participants are civically engaged young professionals committed to equality and social justice.
Jason Barnes is the Young Adults Chair of the Metro Montgomery Branch in Alabama. Jason was the Former University of South Alabama NAACP President (2014) of the University of South Alabama Branch. Jason is employed as a Coordinator of Career Services at Alabama State University and earned a Political Science (2022) from the Alabama State University.
Wayne Shaw is the Young Adults Chair for the Mobile Branch in Alabama. Wayne supports young adult membership outreach and voter registration efforts to promote GOTV.
Ashleigh Gaines is the ACT-SO Chair and Youth Works Chair for the Anchorage Alaska Branch in Alaska. Ashleigh participated in the NAACP ACT-SO Program in the areas of classical music, instrumental music, photography and poetry. Ashleigh previously served as President of the Anchorage Youth Council and is currently working to re-activate the Anchorage Youth Council. Ashleigh graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a minor in Political Science.
Kayla Green is the Chair of the LGTBQ Committee of the Anchorage NAACP Branch in Alaska. Kayla is employed as a Realtor. Prior to real estate, Kayla worked in healthcare as a supervisor, manager, and program director. Kayla earned a degree in Psychology/International Studies from Brigham Young University Idaho. Kayla also earned a Master’s degree in Human Resources Management from Utah State University. Kayla is a lifelong Alaskan and committed community activist.
Xavier Walker is a member of the Maricopa County NAACP Branch. Xavier currently works as the Regional Director for NPH USA. Xavier graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Management and Policies.
Minnae Chabwera is the Treasurer—Communications, Press, and Publicity Chair—Criminal Justice Chair of the Tucson Branch in Arizona. Minnae is employed as a Systems Test Engineer at Raytheon. Minnae earned a Physics degree with Minors in Mathematics and Leadership Studies from the Hampton University. Minnae also graduated from the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor.
Maleah Flournoy is a member of the Oakland Branch in California. Maleah previously served as Secretary of the Imani NAACP Youth Council. Maleah currently works as a Substitute Teacher for the Mount Diablo Unified School District. Maleah graduated from California State University, East Bay with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
Morandon Henry is a member of the Washington, DC NAACP Branch and member of the NAACP National Board of Directors. Morandon previously served as Vice President and Political Action Chair of the California Hawaii NAACP Youth & College Division and former President of the Oakland NAACP Youth Council President . Morandon graduated from Oral Roberts University with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Morandon currently works for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as the Special Projects Assistant to the COO.
Lillian Palmbach recently relocated to Washington, DC from California. Lillian previously served as Communication and Publicity Chair at San Luis Obispo County Branch. She is a member of the Washington, DC NAACP Branch. Lillian graduated from Marist College with her Bachelor of Science in Conservation and from Turin Polytechnic with a Master of Science in International Development and World Heritage.
Sheila Francois is a member of the Aurora Branch in Colorado. She previously served as Political Action Chair of the Georgia NAACP Youth & College Division. She graduated from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and minor in Africana Studies. She graduated with her Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from Mitchell Hamline School of Law. She currently works as a Law Clerk for the Denver District Court.

Allyson Bates is the Health Co-Chair for the NAACP Washington, DC Branch. Allyson currently works for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency as a Program Management Analyst. Allyson graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She graduated from Howard University with a Master’s degree in Economics.
Adria Carter is the Fundraising Committee Chair of the Washington, D.C. Branch. Adria previously served as the President of The George Washington University Chapter. Adria is employed as an Administrative Assistant at Krooth & Altman LLP and earned a Political Science from The George Washington University.
Mark Eke is a member of the Washington, D.C. Branch. Mark is employed as an Information Systems Security Manager at Agility Defense & Government Services. He earned a Computer Science Degree from Madonna University and also obtained a Computer Science from the University of Maryland Global Campus.
DeVaughn Jones is the Economic Development Chair of the Washington, D.C. Branch. DeVaughn is currently a law student and employed as event curator. DeVaughn earned a Financial Economics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. DeVaughn has worked in the entertainment industry for several years. DeVaughn envisions leveraging his business experience and legal education to further his entertainment career. He believes that music, movies, and television are the most powerful determinants of cultural norms. Accordingly, DeVaughn wants to improve culture by uplifting and promoting socially conscious content.
Lauren Poteat is the Women In NAACP (WIN) Chair of the Washington, DC NAACP Branch. Lauren Poteat previously served at the International Affairs Co-Chair and an active member of the Public Relations Committee for the Washington, DC Branch. Lauren Poteat works for National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) as a Washington Correspondent. Lauren also works as a Field Reporter for PG-CTV, located in Upper Marlboro Maryland, and is an occasional guest host on varied radio outlets including Radio One, WHUR and We Act Radio. In 2018, Lauren won the title of Miss Black America Maryland and most recently, the title of Miss Black District of Columbia USA 2019.
Mahasin Salim is a member of the Washington, D.C. NAACP Branch. Mahasin graduated from Trinity Washington University. Mahasin is the co-creator of the Salim Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed to meet the needs of the community, including food, housing, clothing and healthcare. Mahasin also authored a children’s book titled, “My Love.” Mahasin serves a volunteer for Healthy Lives, which is a comprehensive clinical practice offering substance abuse and mental health treatment to adolescents and adults, as well as youth engagement activities and transitional housing. Dr. Nicholaus Nelson-Goedert is a member of the Fort Lauderdale Broward NAACP Branch in Florida. Dr. Nelson-Goedert formerly served as the Vice President of the Georgetown University NAACP College Chapter and served as Vice President of the Miami-Dade NAACP Youth Council. Eboni was the Education Chair of the Duke University Branch in North Carolina. Eboni is employed as a Director of Programs at Greening Youth Foundation and earned an International Comparative Studies Degree from the Duke University. Nia McFarland-Drye is the Assistant Secretary and Young Adults Co-Chair of the Peoria NAACP Branch in Illinois. Nia currently works for the Federal Public Defenders as the Mitigation Specialist. Nia graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and graduated from New York University (NYU) with a Master’s degree in Social Work. Nia also served on the Edwards Coal Plant Settlement Advisory Committee. Nia is the Founder of US GIRLS, which is United Sisterhood of Girls and Womyn addressing the social and emotional needs of young high-risk girls.

Alaina Cottrell is the Young Adult Action Committee Co-Chair of the Buffalo Branch in New York. Alaina is employed as a Community Partner Specialist at Girl Scouts of Western New York and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Canisius College. Alaina also graduated from New York Medical College.
Alain Berrouet is the Criminal Justice Chair of the Jamaica Branch in New York. Alain is employed as a Queens Borough Director at New York City Department of Education and earned a Criminal Justice from CUNY John Jay College. Alain was catapulted into advancing equity when he was stopped and frisked at gunpoint by three plain clothes police officers as a freshman in college. This has currently led Alain to serve on a community board and at civic organizations where he supports bridging inequities that people of color face in his local community. Alain is also the founder of the first Black and Latino Employee Resource Group (ERG) in the NYC Department of Education. The B.L.E.N.D. ERG for the past three years has created equity, diversity, and inclusion for Black & Latino employees, and all New York City Department of Education stakeholders, through recognizing and developing the knowledge, capacity, and leadership of Black and Latino people across the New York City Department of Education. Alain’s primary goal is to continue the legacy the NAACP has built by advancing equity in areas that can have a significant impact on the lives of Black people and help design and share actionable interventions/tools for maximizing impact across this country and globally.
Chanel Caraway is a member of the Mid-Manhattan NAACP Branch in New York. She graduated from American University with Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Master’s degree in Communications. Aylia Doomes is a member of the Mid-Manhattan Branch in New York. Aylia formerly served as President and charter founder of City College of New York Youth and College NAACP of The City College of New York Branch. Aylia earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Biomedical Science with a Minor in Psychology from The City College of New York. Aylia is currently attending medical school and desires to serve the underserved in underrepresented, low-income and minority communities.

She currently works as a Community Organizer and Policy Associate for the New Voices for Reproductive Justice.
Ariana Johnson is a member of the Cleveland Branch in Ohio. Ariana is employed as an Administrative Assistant at Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court and is a Public Policy Fellow under the Carl and Louis Stokes Fellowship. She earned a Journalism and Promotional Communications Degree from Cleveland State University. Ariana also has a Journalism and Promotional Communications Degree from the University of Akron. Ariana is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and the Cuyahoga County Section of the National Council of Negro Women. Ariana serves as the Youth Administrator for her church, Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Additionally, Ariana is the Communications Director for the Cuyahoga County Young Democrats and an executive committee member for the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party. Ariana was the first female President of the Northeast Ohio Young Black Democrats and currently serves on the Bridge Board for the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Ohio.

He also serves as the Membership Chair for the NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference. Brian serves on the Board of Trustees at Zion Baptist Church of Ardmore. Brian is employed as an Academic Outreach Manager for the College of Business & Leadership of Eastern University. Shunkecia Lewis recently relocated to Maryland from Texas. Shunkecia Lewis previously served as the the Communications/Press & Publicity Chair, ACT-SO Co-Chair and 2nd Vice President of the Arlington Branch in Texas. Shunkecia is employed as a Web Content Specialist at the NAACP. Shunkecia earned a Public Relations Degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. Additionally, Shunkecia is among only 20 participants in the 2019 Youth & College Policy Writing Institute, which helps to build a network of young leaders with a passion for creating and pushing policies based on education, voting rights, and economic sustainability. She serves as a volunteer Deputy Registrar giving access to those who need to be registered to vote and was a member of the inaugural Obama Foundation Community Leadership Days.

Anthony Collier is a member of the Houston Branch in Texas. Anthony previously served as the Political Action Chair of the Texas Southern University Branch. Anthony earned a Political Science and Communications degree from Texas Southern University and is currently working toward his Juris Doctor degree at Texas Law. While at Texas Southern University, Anthony worked for the Texas State NAACP and as a policy analyst with the Texas Senate. After graduating from college, he worked as a legislative director at the Texas House of Representatives. Anthony currently volunteers with Law For Black Lives, a pro bono project researching how to deploy legal strategies to seek relief for the scores of Black people and others harmed by narcotic-related convictions, part of a nationwide effort to help address the racialized impact of the War on Drugs.
