Stand Against Hair Relaxing Products
Protecting Our Hair and Our Health
For decades, companies have manufactured and sold hair relaxer products, designed for, and marketed to Black and other women of color.
In October 2022, the National Institutes of Health announced that its study, the "Sister Study," found that women who used chemical hair straightening products were at higher risk for uterine cancer, with an author of the study noting: "Because Black women use hair straightening or relaxer products more frequently and tend to initiate use at earlier ages than other races and ethnicities, these findings may be even more relevant for them."
The Risks of Hair Relaxers
With hair relaxers containing chemicals that disrupt hormones in the human body, these products tend to increase the risk of hormone-sensitive cancers and cancers that impact the reproductive organs, such as:
- Uterine Cancer
- Ovarian Cancer
- Endometrial Cancer
- Uterine Fibroids with one of the following procedures:
- Hysterectomy
- Myomectomy
- Endometrial Ablation

Doing the Work
In 2023, the NAACP passed a resolution entitled: "Pledge to Educate, Validate, and Litigate the Link Between Hair Relaxers and Cancer," noting that up to 80 percent of Black American women have reported using a chemical hair straightening product also known as a "relaxer," "perm," or "permanent."
