Black Voters Matter

Just as the Black community impacts culture, it continues to be a force during elections.

According to Pew Research Center, there are 34,450,000 eligible Black voters in the U.S. - 14% of all eligible voters. The bulk of those voters live in the south (We're looking at you, Texas, Georgia, and Florida). Nowhere are Black voters more critical than in swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and North Carolina where races are so close that they have been decided by a few thousand votes.

While some states try to roll back voting rights and protections, Black voters continue to cast ballots to elect federal, state, and local officials who handle policies that directly impact their communities.

We've been talking to Black voters about their intentions and concerns this election. Here are a few things to know:

  • Black voters are enthusiastic. Of those who were eligible to vote in 2008 during Obama's first run - an election with a historic turnout of Black voters - more than three-quarters (78%) are equally or even more excited for 2024.
  • However, young voters - especially young Black men - need extra efforts to engage in the political process. It's especially important that we give them a reason to get out and vote. While they lag their counterparts in motivation and enthusiasm to vote, we can and should meet them where they are to help them feel informed and engaged.
  • Black voters care about a variety of issues with the economy being an ongoing concern across generations. The cost of everyday necessities like groceries, gas, and housing are top of mind as Black voters decide to cast a ballot.
  • Black voters are not a monolith. Other issues driving their votes include attacks on existing freedoms and racism and systemic discrimination - especially when it comes to the criminal justice system.

There are 45 days until Election Day. It's time to check in with friends, neighbors, and friends to make sure Black voices are heard and that diverse candidates are elected to serve our communities. This National Black Voter Day, lock in and get everything you need to cast your ballot:
