Statement on Loss of Civil Rights Icon Rev. Joseph Lowery

Washington, D.C. (March 28, 2020) – "Today, we've lost a civil rights hero. Rev. Joseph Lowery truly lived up to his nickname as the 'dean' of the civil rights movement, living every day by example and inspiring a new generation of activists and organizers through his historic work with the SCLC. In 1997, the NAACP bestowed Rev. Lowery with our lifetime achievement award, honoring him for his indelible mark on history," said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP.

"We can think of no better way of celebrating his legacy than continuing to fight and make sure we — as Black people — are counted. On behalf of the NAACP, our prayers and support go out to his family in this difficult time."
