DeJoiry McKenzie-Simmons

A student leader, emerging politician, and civil rights advocate. He is a native of St. Peter, Barbados, West Indies but spent his formative years in Saginaw, Michigan.

DeJoiry is a junior at Howard University, majoring in Political Science. He is active on campus, previously serving as the Vice-Chairman of the Howard University Student Association Senate. After graduating, DeJoiry plans to attend law school.

DeJoiry has always had a passion for civil rights. He was introduced to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, through the Saginaw NAACP Youth Council. Within the association, DeJoiry has served in numerous leadership positions. Most recently, he was the President of the Saginaw NAACP Youth Council and the Secretary of the Michigan State Conference NAACP. He currently serves as Chairman of the National Youth Work Committee and sits on the National Convention Planning Committee.

DeJoiry has received many honors and awards. In 2015, he received a State of Michigan Proclamation for Youth in Leadership & Service. He is also a Great Lakes Bay Region Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar, a scholarship given to youth who actively embrace Dr. King's dream of improving racial harmony and social justice. DeJoiry lives each day by a Latin proverb "Dum Spiro Spero" which means, While I breathe, I Hope. A goal to always serve others and be a catalyst.
