Volunteer Captains

Shelby County Voter Activation 5

What is a Captain?

All volunteers receive lists of less frequent voters or lists of other volunteers. Volunteer 'captains' are those volunteers receiving lists of other volunteers. Captains are selected randomly.

Scripts

These scripts will help you continue to foster your relationships with your fellow volunteers as we continue to do the work until Election Day.

Best Practices for Captains

Remember, you're calling fellow volunteers, who also committed to help get out the vote just like you! So, there's no need to "sell" them on participation, just a check-in and encouragement will go a long way, and could be the nudge that's needed to finish their infrequent voter list!

  • Always acknowledge the person you are calling is also an NAACP volunteer.
  • Start the conversation off with a check-in. Don't jump straight into "Have you finished your list?"
  • Emphasize the importance of the work we are collectively sharing.
  • Always identify yourself as a volunteer with the NAACP.
  • Smile while you dial.
  • If you don't know the answer, be truthful and say you will get an answer and follow up.
  • The best times to call are Monday-Friday from 6 pm - 9 pm, and Saturday & Sunday from 10 am - 1 pm.

The fundamental right to vote continues to be under attack, creating a threat to democracy as we know it. Efforts to make it harder for racial minorities to participate in the political process are proliferating across the country - and we're fighting those efforts in court.

From now until election season, we need your help to turnout as many voters as possible. Sign up to power the vote and contact voters within your community.
