FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The NAACP commends President Biden for his Executive Order directing the Department of Health and Human Services to find additional methods to assist in lowering prescription drug costs. With one in four middle-class Americans struggling to afford the cost of their prescriptions, all efforts to reduce these costs is essential.

"The lack of ability to afford medications hits hardest for minority populations," says Keisha Deonarine, Director of the NAACP's Center for Opportunity, Race and Justice Center of Innovation. "For Black Americans, thirty percent are not taking medications as prescribed due to cost. This results in under-usage of necessary medications resulting in poor health outcomes."

Portia Reddick White, Vice President of Policy and Legislation, added, "This directive is an important continuation building upon President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act law that lowers the cost of Affordable Care Act (ACA) premiums and prescription drugs. Given the enormity of the challenges regarding the cost of prescription drugs, we welcome this action."
