NAACP President Derrick Johnson on the Student Loan Repayment Extension

WASHINGTON, DC - NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson issued the following response to the student loan repayment extension:

We need to cancel it, not extend it. President Biden, this is a racial justice issue, it is an economic justice issue, it is a moral issue. Canceling $50,000 is the single best way you can drastically reduce the racial wealth gap, all with the stroke of a pen.

Student debt cancellation will provide economic relief to those who need it most, especially as Americans struggle with increasing gas prices and food costs.

If you can delay repayments for over two years, President Biden, you can cancel student loan debt.
