NAACP President Derrick Johnson on Today's Signing of the Inflation Reduction Act

The White House and Lawn - Daylight

"Today, President Biden signed a bill that not only addresses inflation, but Builds Back Black. The Black community continues to be disproportionately impacted by climate change and the suffocating costs of healthcare. Since the era of President Lyndon Johnson, our community has fought for Medicare's ability to negotiate and lower the cost of prescription drugs, and for decades, we have felt the brunt of the climate crisis, which has only gotten worse. President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act is a meaningful step in addressing both crises. Throughout the process, the NAACP met with a number of lawmakers, negotiators and White House officials on the provisions enacted today. And while we recognize the magnitude of this bill, we will continue to fight for the priorities that didn't make it through and encourage President Biden to move forward on economic relief by cancelling $50,000 in student debt. We commend all lawmakers who voted to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, and the Biden-Harris administration for bringing it to life."
