WASHINGTON – Last night, presidential candidates, Kamala Harris (D) and Donald Trump (R) met for their first debate ahead of the November elections. This debate offered a crucial opportunity for both candidates to display their dedication to prioritizing substantive solutions to the most pressing concerns for Black America.

NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson shared the following reaction:

"Last night's debate must remind us of one thing - we cannot afford to be distracted. This November, we are fighting to be freed from the weight of unbearable debt. We are fighting for representation that understands the value of our futures. We are fighting for our lives, and it's time to act like it. Over the next 2 months, it is imperative that every candidate speaks to our most pressing issues with practical policy solutions. More importantly, we must listen. We have the power to determine what happens next. Let's get to work."

This election cycle, the NAACP is working to mobilize 14.5 million Black voters across 12 priority states. Through its multi-million dollar civic engagement campaign, the nation's largest civil rights organization is leading the advocacy community in community listening, grassroots funding, voter education and election protection.
