WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Milwaukee Police released footage of the violent encounter between D'Vontaye Mitchell and Hyatt Regency security. The incident, which took place on June 30th, ultimately resulted in the death of the 43 year old Milwaukee man. While no charges have been filed, the Milwaukee police Department is currently conducting a homicide investigation while the family awaits full results of the autopsy.

NAACP President and CEO, Derrick Johnson, shared the following statement, offering condolences and calling on Hyatt Hotels to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of all their guests and visitors:

"Once again, another Black family is left to mourn the loss of their loved one at the hands of excessive force. Time and time again, those tasked with the duty of protection are the same individuals committing acts of violence against members of our community. When will enough be enough? How many families will be forced to hear the cries of their loved ones as they take their final breaths?

Four years following the tragic death of George Floyd, we are still witnessing the deadly impacts of sanctioned violence that continues to disproportionately affect our community. If it hasn't been made clear yet – it's time to keep your knees off our necks. While we acknowledge the initial steps taken by Hyatt to terminate the employees involved, this is not the final solution. The NAACP is calling for swift and decisive action in this investigation. Charges must be filed against all individuals responsible. We urge Hyatt Hotels to develop a comprehensive plan, providing their security with the necessary cultural competency and de-escalation tactics to ensure tragedies such as this don't take place again. Anything less would be a signal to Black America that their lives are not valued at these establishments."

The NAACP has long been vocal in their advocacy for Black travelers, speaking out against incidents of discrimination and violence that occur at the hands of corporations. Most recently, the Association worked with American Airlines to devise a path forward following a series of  discriminatory incidents.
