NAACP Statement on the Inflation Reduction Act

Capitol Facade

The NAACP commends Senate passage of H.R. 5376, the Inflation Reduction Act.  Today's Senate vote marks an important step on the way to providing economic relief for Black Americans and other people of color.

This success stands in stark contrast to failed efforts by some members of the Senate that offered over 500 amendments to block reductions in healthcare costs, and climate change mitigation.
Although not perfect, the Inflation Reduction Act is a step forward.  It is troubling that seven Senators blocked the cap on insulin costs for individuals with private insurance.  Although diabetes affects far too many Black Americans, the Inflation Reduction Act will allow the government to negotiate prices on prescription drugs, provide continued subsidies for Obamacare, and invest in clean energy.

With much remaining to be done, the NAACP commends the Biden Administration and the U.S. Senate on today's victory and looks forward to next week's House vote on the Inflation Reduction Act.
