Helen hails from the great state of Kansas, the home of Brown vs. Board of Education. She is a native of Overland Park. At age 7, Helen's grandparents, Leneer and Rebecca Barber gifted her a lifetime membership to the Johnson County NAACP. To date, she has attended 11 NAACP National conventions. Her family's goal was to prepare her for life as a black woman living in America. She became very passionate about civil rights at a young age.

Currently, Helen is a Sophomore at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the most diverse university in the country. Her major is Hospitality Management with a concentration in Meetings and Events and minors in Marketing. Helen is a member of many organizations at UNLV, including; UNLV NAACP, Black Student Organization, UNLV Young Democrats, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and National Society of Leadership and Success. After Helen receives her Bachelor's degree from UNLV, she plans on continuing her education to graduate school to obtain a Masters in Business. Currently Helen mentors elementary school kids in the inner city of Las Vegas to encourage the youth to beat the poor minority dropout statistics.

Helen's passion for community engagement in the Kansas City metro area started at an early age. At 15 years old, one of the proudest moments of her life was when she represented black youth in Johnson County for the NAACP as a panel member for a Community Police Forum. In January, Helen was asked to be the keynote speaker for the 50th anniversary of the Johnson County Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration. The theme of her speech was how the youth need to continue to carry on the dream of Martin Luther King and the vision of the NAACP.
