What you need to know about Employment
In the past year, 300,000+ Black women have had a mass exodus out of the labor force, with the national rate rising for Black unemployment rate at 7.9% as of April, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, primarily due to sweeping cuts in public-sector agencies, dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion, and federal downsizing, which targeted Black women's traditional strongholds in middle-class employment.
Employment is crucial because it provides the primary source of income for financial security, offering access to essential benefits like healthcare and retirement plans.
The NAACP recognizes the intentional attacks on the Future of Black Workers and will not stand by and watch the decline of the Black economy and talented women left behind. We are seizing opportunities in our own hands and connecting available job positions with host employers, fighting for employment protection, and pushing for better job opportunities.
How to prepare for a job interview?
- DO arrive early and be prepared
- DO network with colleagues outside of your immediate team
- DO show initiative for new tasks and be flexible
- DO arrive 15 minutes early and bring extra resumes
- DO research the company and prepare examples of your work
- DO send a thank-you letter expressing interest
Don'ts:

- DON'T speak negatively about past employers
- DON'T ask about salary or benefits too early
