The NAACP strongly condemns any effort to remove Congressman Al Green from his House committee assignments, as well as the threats made against his safety. A former president of the NAACP Houston Branch, Congressman Green has long exemplified a deep commitment to justice, public service, and the rule of law.

These attacks are not isolated — they are rooted in a long and shameful tradition of racial intolerance aimed at silencing Black leadership in government and across our communities. The toxic politics of the current administration only amplify that legacy.

Radical right-wing lawmakers such as Rep. Joe Wilson (SC) — previously reprimanded by the House — and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) — formally censured — continue to erode democratic norms and embolden dangerous behavior. When Rep. Wilson launched a similar verbal outburst, the consequences were far less severe, revealing a troubling double standard.

Since the rise of the 45th — and now 47th — president, we've seen a disturbing trend of public officials encouraging the disrespect of government institutions, civil servants, and communities of color. The threats against Congressman Green reflect an environment where violence is not just tolerated but tacitly endorsed as a tool for political retribution.

This moment demands moral clarity. Threats against elected officials represent a dangerous break from the values of democracy and decency. We will not be silent in the face of such injustice.
