BOSTON – Today, NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson was joined by local and national NAACP leaders, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and other key Massachusetts stakeholders for a press conference to preview the upcoming 114th National Convention in Boston from July 26, 2023 to August 1, 2023.

"Each year, NAACP members, friends, and elected leaders gather at the Convention in a shared space that has proven vital for our collective growth and advocacy," said NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson. "This space, intently curated each year by the Association's local branch, state conference, and national leaders, provides us with the ability to harness the power of Black America. We use this sacred time to inspire each other and align on what we need to do to continue pushing this country forward. Now more than ever, this sacred convening is crucial to our continued fight for the preservation of democracy. We are excited to bring vitality and vibrance to our roots in Boston, home of the Association's first chartered branch."

"Boston is thrilled to be hosting the 2023 NAACP National Convention led by the nation's historic first chartered branch," said Mayor Michelle Wu. "As we continue to work towards this historic event, these free, family friendly events and programming are for residents, families and visitors to enjoy throughout the week of the convention. We look forward to seeing residents and visitors gather together and I encourage everyone to engage with these amazing opportunities."

Other leaders, including NAACP Convention Committee Chairman Michael Turner, shared what to expect when a representation of NAACP's network of over 2 million activists, allies, and entrepreneurs convene for lively conversations with inspirational guest speakers and celebrations of dynamic Black trailblazers.

"Year after year, a resounding chorus of community members, celebrities, and elected leaders join us at the National Convention because this is where Black America reunites to recalibrate our compass. The Association and our network of activists have consistently influenced the moral direction of this country since its founding, proving time again that Black people can, and will, move mountains together," said NAACP Convention Committee Chairman Michael Turner. "I look forward to another Convention filled with impactful and meaningful conversations and celebrations that will advance Black America's vision for a society where we can thrive together."

The 114th National Convention will focus on the theme of Thriving Together by inviting change-makers from across the country to celebrate the Black community's collective power. Additional events will include the annual Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO), the Cinematic Shorts Competition, and the Spingarn Freedom Fund Awards Dinner honoring Dr. Hazel Dukes. This year, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will present Dr. Dukes with the Spingarn Medal.

"I am deeply honored to present my dear friend Dr. Hazel Dukes with the prestigious Spingarn Medal in recognition of her fearless leadership in forging a path towards a more just community in New York and across the country," said former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. "Through a fierce commitment to bettering the lives of New Yorkers, both through the power of education and political empowerment, Dr. Dukes has transcended the boundaries of activism and advocacy. She has left an indelible mark on the State of New York, opening doors, and serving as inspiration for the next generation of leaders. Hazel is a beacon guiding her community with strength and courage in pursuit of justice. May her unwavering spirit inspire us to rise above adversity and work tirelessly toward a brighter, more compassionate future."
