WASHINGTON — Today, NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson issued the following statement applauding the indictment of Donald Trump on felony charges for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and undermine democracy, including conspiracies that culminated in the January 6 insurrection:
"Let's be clear - the indictment of Donald Trump is a victory for democracy. The NAACP has worked tirelessly to hold the former President and his co-conspirators accountable for their attempts to undermine our democracy and endanger Americans. That's why we moved swiftly to file a lawsuit against Trump, and that's why we applaud the work and commitment of special counsel Jack Smith to carry the torch of justice, no matter what. Nobody is above the law, not even a former President."
In February 2021, the NAACP filed the first lawsuit (Thompson v. Trump) in response to the January 6th attack, representing 10 members of congress in the case.
