WASHINGTON – Today, Judge Louis Angles of Clay County, Missouri ruled that Andre Lester has been charged in the racially motivated shooting of Ralph Yarl and will face trial. The felony charges come after Lester pled not guilty back in April and was released on bond. NAACP President and CEO, Derrick Johnson, said the following in response to the announcement of felony charges being filed:
"The indictment announced today marks the first step toward justice for the Yarl family. Let's be clear - there is no place for hate in a democracy. The NAACP commends the jurors in Clay County for taking the necessary actions to hold this criminal accountable. We are thankful that Ralph Yarl is still alive to testify, unlike the countless other Black Americans who have lost their lives at the hands of white supremacy. As we await the upcoming trial, the NAACP remains committed to stopping the proliferation of hate that is spreading like a wildfire across this nation. We will continue to stand in solidarity with the Yarl family and are prepared to do everything in our power to ensure justice prevails."
