WASHINGTON – This weekend marks the 104th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, where a White mob decimated the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, also known as "Black Wall Street" in 1921. In one of our nation's most horrific acts of racial violence, hundreds of Black residents were killed or injured, many more were displaced, and thousands of Black-owned businesses and homes were destroyed.

Over a century later, we remember the pain, the suffering, and dreams deferred by hatred and malice. But as we reflect, we must also remember the excellence and resilience of the trailblazers who built the prosperous, first-of-its-kind Black hub where churches, homes, grocery stores, banks, hotels, and theaters witnessed thriving economic success.

Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO, shared the following statement in remembrance of the lives devastated by the Tulsa Massacre:

"As I reflect on the 104 years since the violence in Tulsa, I'm reminded that we must recommit to dismantling the systems of racism that allowed such atrocities to happen — and that still persist today. This anniversary is not just a remembrance, but a call to action. A call to confront our past with truth and advance policies that restore justice for Black communities across our nation. At this moment, we are confronted with constant attacks on our history and attempts to roll back our rights. Black history is American history. We need to remember our history to create a brighter future.

"For far too long, we have faced oppression, racism, and hatred at the hands of those who oppose progress. Today, we remember the power of community and the fierce urgency of now. Now is the time for change, now is the time for unity, now is the time to harness our collective power and invest in us.

"The NAACP remembers Greenwood not only for its tragic destruction, but for its vision: a community built on Black prosperity, innovation, and pride. That vision remains alive in every effort to build equity, demand justice, and ensure our history is never erased."
